October 23, 2011 | Psalm 8 | humanity, theology

Pastor Gary Combs continues his series entitled “Faith Foundations” with this message from Psalm 8. In this Davidic Psalm, the question “What is man?” is posed. This message addresses that question as it discusses the origin, nature and destiny of man.

“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12)

October 22, 2011

Wisdom understands that our time here is short, so don’t waste your life. Live for God with passion, power, and a sense of Divine urgency. If the “length of our days is seventy,” then stop thinking of retirement. Let God use you up and all the more till the end.

“I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations” (Psalm 89:1)

October 19, 2011

Shouldn’t the One who made man’s mouth receive our songs and praise? What words and songs fill your mouth? Have you taught your children and grandchildren to sing “Jesus Loves Me?” Their mouths only repeat what they hear from ours.

“He commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children” (Psalm 78:5-6)

October 6, 2011

Have you taught your children about Jesus? Do they know the way of salvation? You cannot delegate this job. Parents, teach your children and your children’s children about God.

“Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come” (Psalm 71:18)

September 29, 2011

What will the 4th quarter of your life look like? Will you be more like Jesus? Will young people be attracted to you? Will you go out like a consuming spiritual flame or with a complaining whimper?

“Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me” (Psalm 59:1)

September 15, 2011

Sometimes we need a protector. Someone to stand guard while we sleep. Call on the Lord. He will defend you. He knows what is needed and when. Let Him defend your cause.

“I cry out to God Most High, to God, who fulfills his purpose for me” (Psalm 57:2)

September 13, 2011

David had a sense of God’s calling on his life. He wanted to live into that calling fully. He delighted to be what God wanted him to be. Do you believe God has a purpose for you? Do you pray for God’s will to be fulfilled in you? Or are you still asking for your own way?

“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you” (Psalm 55:22)

September 11, 2011

Are you burdened by a load of care? Do you stoop under its load and feel unable to go on? Why not give them to the One who is able? Stop trying to tough it out and suck it up. Give your cares, worries, and troubles to God. He can carry them and you. Learn to lean.

“Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me” (Psalm 43:3)

August 29, 2011

Light to help us see what’s ahead and to find the path you desire for me. Truth to help us know what is masquerading as good, when it’s really falsehood and temptation. These are found in your Word. May your Word speak to us as we read it today. Lord, shine and speak.

“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” (Psalm 42:11)

August 28, 2011

David encouraged himself in the Lord. Lift your own soul up to the Lover of souls. Sometimes we are down without even knowing why, but God knows us better than we know ourselves. Cry out to Him.
