“He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1)

January 2, 2013

The first temptation by the serpent was to question God’s Word. His evil strategy hasn’t changed. It’s not enough to know the Word, we must also believe it. Let’s counter today’s culture of biblical illiteracy and doubt. Read, know and believe God’s Word.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1 ESV)

January 1, 2013

The first verse of the Bible sets the tone and the foundation for a truly biblical worldview. “In the beginning God,” not me first, not some other thing, but God first. God is Creator and everything else that exists is His creation. Understand this. Meditate on it. That God is God and you are not. That He is in control and you are not. On this first day of 2013, let us recognize God’s first place in all things. First day, first things, first place… Lord, I give you my life afresh for a new year. What do you want to do? You go first. I’ll follow.

“The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from his descendants, until the coming of the one to whom it belongs, the one whom all nations will honor” (Genesis 49:10)

January 24, 2012

Jacob’s prophecy over Judah is Messianic, pointing to the Lion of Judah, the Son of David, the Christ. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy and over 300 others in the OT.

“So it was God who sent me here, not you!” (Genesis 45:8)

Joseph forgives his brothers and offers to care for them during the famine. In spite of the years of slavery and prison, Joseph trusted God’s sovereignty. Instead of kicking against our circumstances and blaming others, we can learn from Joseph. We can trust that God is in charge, leaving the results up to Him.

“But Jacob said, ‘I will not let you go unless you bless me'” (Genesis 32:26)

January 16, 2012

Jacob spends a dark night of the soul wrestling with God. God changes his name from Jacob (pulling my leg/deceiver) to Israel (wrestled with God). Jacob walks with a limp the rest of his life, but he has a new identity from God. Have you ever experienced a dark night of the soul, wrestling with God?

“So Isaac called for Jacob, blessed him, and said, ‘You must not marry any of these Canaanite women'” (Genesis 28:1)

There is a spiritual principle here for singles. Don’t be unequally yoked (2 Cor. 6:14). This includes dating. Why tempt your heart? Put a person’s spiritual condition at the top of your “What I’m looking for in a mate” list!

“So Abraham said to God, ‘May Ishmael live under your special blessing!'” (Genesis 17:18)

January 7, 2012

Both Judaism and Islam claim Abraham as Father. The sons of Isaac and Ishmael have been in conflict since their beginning. But the Son of God can reconcile this rift. For the true sons of Abraham are now born of the Spirit and not of the flesh (Gal. 3:7).

“Then Shem and Japheth took a robe, held it over their shoulders, and backed into the tent to cover their father” (Genesis 9:23)

January 4, 2012

When someone sins, should we play “Gotcha” and expose them? Or should we graciously offer a covering? This story is a foreshadowing of what the Son of God and of Shem has done for us. Jesus comes not to accuse, but to cover our sin with His own blood.

“You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master” (Genesis 4:7)

January 2, 2012

Good advice for a new year. Sin is crouching like a lion ready to pounce. Be ready to fight temptation. We are in a battle, put on the full armor of God!

“God called the light ‘day’ and the darkness ‘night.’ And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day” (Genesis 1:5)

January 1, 2012

And since that first day, the sun always comes up and a new day begins. A new page to write on and a New Year to bring glory to our Creator begins today. What will you do with 2012? Will the busyness of life overtake or will you focus on the important?
