“If only there were a mediator between us, someone who could bring us together” (Job 9:33 NLT)

August 23, 2014

Job cried out for a mediator between him and God. He knew that the span between them was too great. He desired one who might shield him from punishment and make it possible for him to speak to the Lord without fear. Job’s prayer has been heard. Jesus is our Mediator. The Bible declares, “There is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).

“What are people, that you should make so much of us, that you should think of us so often?” (Job 7:17 NLT)

August 22, 2014

Job doesn’t accuse God of being absent, but of being too present. He doesn’t blame his suffering on being forsaken by the Lord as most would do. No. He questions why God would be so interested in such weak, temporal things as man. Out of all of creation, why would God care so much for us? Job had lost nearly everything that he loved, yet he did not lose his faith in God. Like Jacob, he wrestled with God for answers, but did not doubt the One who made him walk with a limp.

“I came naked from my mother’s womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The Lord gave me what I had, and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord!” (Job 1:21 NLT)

August 21, 2014

Job worshiped the Lord both in happiness and in the midst of suffering. He recognized that all good comes from the Lord. When he lost all that he had, he did not lose his faith. In this, his faith was tested and found genuine. How we face good and bad times reveals the true nature of our faith. How is this season of life affecting your faith?

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Who determined its dimensions and stretched out the surveying line? What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4-7)

August 31, 2012

God’s question for Job is still relevant. “Where were you?” when the Creator spoke and the stars began to sing?

“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman” (Job 31:1)

August 29, 2012

Job’s “eye covenant” is needed today more than ever. In our sex-saturated culture, young men are constantly bombarded with images that warp their view of women. And young women are damaged by our culture’s over-sexualized view of beauty. We’ve lost the idea of “pretty.” We teach our little girls to be “hot” and “sexy,” then wonder why they struggle with low self-image. We need an “image covenant” that aligns with God’s design for human sexuality.

“But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last. And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God!” (Job 19:25-26)

August 25, 2012

Christ had not yet interrupted history by His death, burial and resurrection, yet Job already hoped for such a “Redeemer.” Job placed his hope in this future Messiah as one peering through a veil. However, we can gaze fully at our Savior with the revelation of the gospel shining as in the light of day. If Job could “know” that his Redeemer liveth, then we should know all the more!

“Then Job spoke again: ‘If my misery could be weighed and my troubles be put on the scales, they would outweigh all the sands of the sea” (Job 6:1-3)

August 22, 2012

Have you ever felt like Job? At times like this even well-meaning friends can be a burden. Only God can get us through such seasons. God isn’t afraid of our questions and concerns. Bring them to Him. Don’t stuff or medicate. Pour out your trouble before God. Come to Him as you are and leave changed. He can turn your misery into joy.

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?” (Job 38:4)

August 31, 2011

God finally speaks. Many today think they know how the world began. Men who’ve barely lived 50 years speak of 5 billion years and big bang theories. I think God laughs at man’s wisdom. I love science and history, but I love God’s revealed Word more. Someday, we’ll get the true answers.

“I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth” (Job 19:25)

August 25, 2011

Even in the midst of his trouble, Job believes. He is hurt and angry, but he doesn’t doubt God’s existence nor His ultimate redemption. Reading Job is for those ready to go on in the school of faith.

“If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both, someone to remove God’s rod from me” (Job 9:33-34)

August 23, 2011

Job cries out for One like Jesus. One who could stretch out his hands between heaven and earth and offer reconciliation. Christ is this Advocate who represents God to us and us to God.
