“‘Am I a God who is only close at hand?’ says the Lord. ‘No, I am far away at the same time. Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?’ says the Lord” (Jeremiah 23:23-24)

God gave Jeremiah the difficult task of prophesying Israel’s fall, but He also gave him a fuller revelation of Himself. Reading God’s Word we tend to look for answers for our situation, but the greater unveiling is God Himself. God is both immanent and transcendent, near and far away. God seemed far away from Israel because of their sin, but He drew near to Jeremiah in the midst of this trial. In the book of James we are told, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). The Bible is primarily about God and how we can be brought near to Him. Where is God in your life today?

“If you speak good words rather than worthless ones, you will be my spokesman. You must influence them; do not let them influence you! They will fight against you like an attacking army, but I will make you as secure as a fortified wall of bronze.” (Jeremiah 15:19-20)

This is God’s response after Jeremiah cried out in prayer about the persecution he was enduring due to the message God had given him to preach. Everyone who is faithful to share God’s message will be tempted to be “influenced” by men rather than God. But if you speak His Word faithfully, He will make you like a “fortified wall of bronze” who influences others. Do you want to be influential for God?

“’This is what the Lord says: “Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Jeremiah 6:16)

Like many in our modern generation, the people of Judah replied, “No, that’s not the road we want!” Within their lifetimes the land of Judah fell and the people were carried into Babylonian exile. There are “crossroad” moments for every nation and generation. I wonder what our generation will decide. Will they choose the old, godly way or not?

“The time is coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant…I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people” (Jeremiah 31:31-33)

We are the recipients of this New Covenant of which Jeremiah prophesied. It is Jesus the Christ that has redeemed us and given us these new minds and hearts.

“Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you” (Jeremiah 29:7)

Do you ever ask how you ended up in this place? Rather than begging God for a move, consider the possibility that God wants you there. Perhaps He wants to bless this place through you. Are you a complaining presence or a blessing to the place you inhabit now?

“Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces” (Jeremiah 23:29)

God said this in response to the false prophets whose words were based on their dreams. He said their words were like straw. God’s Word isn’t passive and weak. It burns and breaks us when our hearts are opened to hear it. Has your life been set aflame by the Word?

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him” (Jeremiah 17:7)

In what or whom do you place your trust? God often removes that in which we trust in order to show the fallacy of it and to offer HImself instead. If God calls you to do something, don’t let lack of resources stop you. This is the very time that God proves Himself. Put your confidence in Him.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5)

Do you have a sense of calling? An awareness of destiny? You should. God had you in mind before you existed. You are not as some suppose, a mere roll of the evolutionary dice. You are created for a purpose.
