“For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.” (Jeremiah 31:25 ESV)

Jeremiah prophesied of a day when Israel would return from being scattered among the nations to the land of promise, a day when their “weary” and “languishing” souls would be “satisfied” and “replenished” by the Lord Himself. And so, Jesus came saying, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matt.11:28-30). It is the Person of Jesus that God has given to satisfy our souls.

God told the prophet Jeremiah of a new covenant that He would make with His people in the future. That future is now. The law is no longer written on stone tablets, but it is written by grace on the hearts of those who have believed and received the righteousness of Christ.

God promised Jeremiah a New Covenant, one written on human hearts instead of tablets of stone. Isn’t this the New Covenant we have in Christ?

“The time is coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant…I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people” (Jeremiah 31:31-33)

We are the recipients of this New Covenant of which Jeremiah prophesied. It is Jesus the Christ that has redeemed us and given us these new minds and hearts.
