“And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision” (1 Samuel 3:1 ESV).
The book of 1 Samuel described a dark season in Israel’s history near the end of the period of the judges, when the people had abandoned God’s ways and “everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Because of Israel’s sin and the corruption of its spiritual leaders, the word of the Lord had become rare. Divine revelation was not flowing freely among the people. Yet this silence prepared the way for God’s new work through Samuel. The Lord was about to speak again and raise up a faithful prophet to call His people back to Himself. Throughout redemption history, when God speaks after a silence, it often signals revival and renewal.
We should receive this verse as both warning and hope. Sin dulls our spiritual hearing and makes our hearts less sensitive to God’s voice. When we neglect God’s Word, we should not be surprised if it begins to feel distant and rare to us. Yet God’s silence is not His absence. He still raises up faithful servants and sends His Word again in seasons of renewal. We must humble ourselves, repent of spiritual neglect, and seek Him with hungry hearts. If we long to hear from God, we must open His Word, listen carefully, and obey quickly. If God seems silent, perhaps it’s because we’re not listening and obeying.
PRAYER: Dear Father, forgive us for the ways we have neglected Your Word. Awaken us to hear You again. Raise up faithful servants to proclaim Your truth across the nations. Send revival to Your church and let Your Word go forth with power. Give us hearts that listen, believe, and obey. Keep us near You so that Your Word will never grow quiet among us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
