The Gospel is About Relationship, not Religion

April 7, 2013 | John 3:1-21 | easter, gospel

Pastor Gary Combs continues the 4-week series “Evangelium: What the Gospel Is… And Isn’t” with this message from John 3. This message shows how the encounter between the religious Pharisee named Nicodemus and the Lord Jesus reveals the distinctive nature of the gospel contrasted with religion. Because while religion attempts to work from the outside-in, the gospel does its work from the inside out. Or as Jesus told Nicodemus, “You must be born again.”

Pastor Gary Combs concluded the 6-part sermon series entitled “Loving Our Jerusalem” with this Palm Sunday message from John about how to tell the story of God’s love. Growing in Believing

January 20, 2013 | John 8:23-32 | discipleship

Pastor Gary Combs continues the series entitled “Healthy for Life” with this message from John 8:23-32 on the importance of growing up and being mature in our believing. If healthy things grow and if Jesus grew in wisdom, then Christians should be growing in wisdom, in knowledge and understanding too. In other words, as we follow Jesus, we can grow up to maturity in Christ’s wisdom.

“Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true” (John 18:37)

How Jesus answered Pilate’s questioning. Pilate’s response: “What is truth?” We live in a relativistic age that questions the idea of absolute truth too. But those who “love truth” will see the truth revealed in Jesus.

“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message” (John 17:20)

The night before Jesus was crucified, He prayed not only for the Twelve, but also for all of us who would believe the gospel message.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5)

Christians are not called to imitate Christ. They are called to abide in Him, so that His life is manifest in theirs. Our effort is not to do Christlike things, but to tenaciously cling to the Vine, so that His life flows through us to produce spiritual fruit.

“I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark” (John 12:46)

Wake up sleeper. Come into the Light and walk no longer in darkness. Jesus is the Light of the world. Wake up!

“Jesus replied, ‘Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me’” (John 12:7-8)

Others may not understand, but Jesus defends the one who expresses extravagant and sacrificial love to Him.
