The “worthless things” to which Paul referred was the worship of Zeus and Hermes. He contrasts them with the “living God” who is Creator of all. We are still called to bring this message to the nations until every tribe and tongue has heard.

Throughout history wherever the Word has spread, believers have followed. Doing good in the world should be the result of having the Word in us. But preaching the Word to the world is our highest calling. Shelter, clothes and food are good for the body, but it’s the giving out of the Word that offers life to the soul.

Peter knew the adventure of being led by the Spirit. He obeyed the Spirit’s voice and took the gospel to the Roman soldier, Cornelius. God still speaks to those who have ears to hear.

God called Saul to a very specific ministry. Do you think God still calls people today? Are we “chosen instruments” to a certain family, city, school, workplace, nation, people group, etc? If God still does this, then don’t you want to be that “chosen instrument” in His hands?

Today’s OT and NT reading were both about the Temple. Here, Stephen gives his defense before the Sanhedrin before they have him stoned. He tried to turn them from man-made religion to God’s graceful provision in Jesus. But they wouldn’t listen.

The central truth of Christianity is the resurrection of Christ. This is the message that Peter preached at Pentecost that pierced the hearts of his hearers. Peter was an eye witness of this resurrected Christ. Our faith rests on the historical evidence of the resurrection.

Pastor Gary Combs continues the WITNESS sermon series with this message from Acts 26 about prayer. Prayer isn’t a footnote to evangelism. It’s the top note! In the book of Acts, the apostle Paul was brought before the new Roman governor of Judea, Porcius Festus, under accusation by the Jews. Wishing to get their opinion on this Jewish matter, he invited King Agrippa and his sister Bernice to hear Paul’s case. Paul told them how Christ saved him and commissioned him to carry the gospel to Jews and Gentiles. Paul realized that this commission to “open” men’s eyes was dependent on God’s power. Paul recognized the necessity of prayer in preparation for seeing people come to Christ.
