What the apostle John here calls “proof,” the apostle Paul calls a “guarantee (deposit, earnest, pledge)” (Eph. 1:14). Paul spoke of how the Holy Spirit seals our salvation, giving us inward assurance of salvation. But John is more concerned with what this mutual abiding looks like outwardly. He says that the one who lives in the Spirit and has the Spirit living in him, will testify that Jesus is the Son of God with his lips and have the love of God for others in his actions. The outworking of the Spirit living in us is evidenced by our testimony about Jesus and our love of others.

After Daniel received a vision of the end of days, he was greatly troubled and asked for more detail. But the angel replied that the words were sealed until the end. The comfort that Daniel was given wasn’t the details of the outcome, but the promise that he would “rest” and then “stand” at the end. In the meantime, Daniel was to keep going the way he was going. In other words, “Don’t worry Dan, God has the end of things all worked out. Just keep being faithful during your days. He’ll make sure you stand with Him at the end of days.”

“Perfect” – (teteleiōtai) has been brought to full development, complete, having finished or run the race to the end. This “perfect love” has no mixture of fear left in it. Fearless love.

True for congressman, judges, senators and presidents too. Praying for leaders who are above bribery, leaders who fear God more than man (ie. special interest groups, lobbyists, media, etc.).
