“Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days” (Psalm 90:14 ESV).
In Psalm 90, Moses contrasts the eternal nature of God with the frailty and brevity of human life. In verse 14, he pleads for what our souls most desperately need—God’s steadfast love (Hebrew: “chesed”). Having reflected on the brevity of life and the weight of God’s righteous anger over sin, Moses knows that only divine mercy can restore joy to the human heart. “In the morning” signifies a new beginning—a fresh encounter with the faithful love of God that renews and sustains us. This love is not earned but freely given by grace, and it alone can satisfy the longing of our souls. Our days in this world may be short, but they can be filled with rejoicing when they are anchored in God’s unfailing love.
We live in a world that constantly promises satisfaction yet always leaves us empty. Our hearts crave significance, but apart from God, our lives are like a mist that quickly fades. Each morning we need to be filled anew with His steadfast love—His covenant mercy that gives meaning to our days. This love has been fully revealed in Jesus Christ. He is the embodiment of God’s “chesed” love, which is God’s unconditional, agape love. Being filled afresh by the Spirit of Christ, our mornings can be marked not by dread or duty, but by joy and gladness that fill our days. When we begin each day by turning our hearts toward Christ, we find that His love truly satisfies, no matter what the day brings.
PRAYER: Dear Father, satisfy us this morning with Your steadfast love made known to us through Jesus Your Son. Teach us to find our joy and meaning not in the fleeting things of this world but in Your unchanging mercy. Renew our hearts each day with the gladness that comes from abiding in You. May every sunrise remind us of Your faithfulness, and may our lives bring glory to Your eternal name. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
