“They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share” (1 Timothy 6:18 ESV).
Paul instructed Timothy to charge the wealthy believers in Ephesus not to set their hopes on riches but on God, “who richly provides us with everything to enjoy” (v.17). Instead of trusting in material wealth, they were to invest in eternal treasures by doing good, being rich in good works, generous, and ready to share. Paul wasn’t condemning wealth itself but warning against its deception and self-sufficiency. The phrase “be rich in good works” turns the world’s view of wealth upside down: true riches are found not in accumulation but in generosity. The wealthy Christian is not called to feel guilty for having resources but to steward them faithfully for God’s glory and the advancement of the gospel. Generosity is not subtraction from our wealth but multiplication of our joy and eternal reward.
In America, we live among the wealthiest believers in history. Even those who consider themselves “middle class” have far more than most of the world. Yet the temptation remains to trust in our possessions instead of the Provider. Paul’s charge calls us to examine whether we are rich in generosity. Are we investing in what lasts—souls and gospel work—or merely storing up treasures that will perish? When we give to gospel ministry, we are participating in the spread of the good news of Christ, helping others find the true riches of eternal life in Him. Let us remember: we are not owners but stewards of God’s abundance, and our generosity is an act of worship. As Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). And as He also said, “Everyone to whom much is given, of him much will be required” (Luke 12:48). Therefore, let us be generous stewards of God’s blessings for God’s Kingdom work!
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for richly providing all that we need and more. Forgive us when we trust in our possessions rather than in You. Teach us to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share. May our giving advance Your gospel and reveal our treasure in heaven. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
