“The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they go down into the inner parts of the body.” (Proverbs 18:8 ESV).
In this proverb, Solomon observed the destructive appeal of gossip. He described the words of a whisperer—someone who spreads secrets or slander—as “delicious morsels.” These words were not just heard and dismissed; they were eagerly received and internalized, sinking deep into the heart and soul. The imagery suggested that gossip had a seductive quality, much like a sweet or savory bite of food that brings temporary pleasure. Yet beneath the surface, it worked its way into the innermost parts, where it stirred up suspicion, resentment, and division. Solomon highlighted not only the danger of speaking gossip but also the subtle damage it caused to those who listened. The proverb offered no commendation but issued a quiet warning to both the whisperer and the hearer. For they both share responsibility for the toxic spread of strife.
We must guard our mouths and our ears. Gossip often comes cloaked in concern or curiosity, but its effect is anything but harmless. Whether we are tempted to share a juicy detail or to lean in and listen, we should remember that these “delicious morsels” are spiritually poisonous. They may taste sweet in the moment, but they harm our hearts, our relationships, and our witness. If we speak gossip, we need to repent and seek restoration. If we entertain gossip, we need to resist it and lovingly redirect the conversation. Let us be people who build up with our words rather than tear down. May we develop a hunger for what is true, honorable, and life-giving instead of what merely satisfies sinful curiosity.
PRAYER: Dear Father, we confess that we have not always guarded our words or our ears. We have been too quick to speak of others and too slow to stop harmful speech. Forgive us for the times we have allowed gossip to take root in our hearts. Help us to hunger for righteousness and truth, and to use our words to encourage and restore rather than divide. Strengthen us to walk in wisdom, to speak with grace, and to listen with discernment. In Jesus’ name, amen.
