LEADING LIKE JESUS

“After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?” But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else” (Mark 9:33-35 NLT).

Jesus turned the theory of leadership upside down. He taught His disciples that the path to greatness in God’s economy was downward, not upward. They had been arguing about which of them would be the greatest in God’s kingdom. So Jesus gave them the secret to greatness–– serving others.

Jesus was the model of the Servant Leader. He led by service. Washing feet, feeding the hungry, healing the sick, teaching the ignorant– this is how Jesus led. And this is how He still expects us to lead. Leadership is stewardship. In God’s economy, it is entrusted to those who are willing to lead like Jesus.

PRAYER: Dear Father, we are in awe of Your love for us. For You have sent Your Son Jesus to die for our sins that we might be saved. We are in awe of You. Help us to be servant leaders like Your Son. For when we humble ourselves, You have promised to lift us up. In Jesus’ name, amen.
