“For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens” (Hebrews 7:26 ESV).
Hebrews 7:26 offers one of the most magnificent descriptions of Jesus Christ as our Great High Priest. The phrase “it was indeed fitting” comes from the Greek word eprepen, meaning Jesus was “perfectly suited” to meet our deepest spiritual need. Because sin has separated us from God, we need more than a religious teacher or moral example. We need a mediator who can reconcile us to a holy God.
And Jesus is exactly the Priest we need! He is holy, innocent, and unstained by sin. He is separated from sinners in His moral perfection and exalted above the heavens in His glorious position. Unlike the earthly priests who had to offer sacrifices for their own sins, Jesus is the sinless Son of God who offered Himself once for all as the perfect sacrifice for our sins (Heb. 7:27).
There is a beautiful connection between Hebrews 4:15 and Hebrews 7:26. The former emphasizes Christ’s identification with us: He was tempted as we are, yet without sin. The latter emphasizes His distinction from us: He is perfectly holy and exalted above the heavens.
Together, they reveal a wonderful gospel truth: Jesus fully shares our humanity and understands our weaknesses, yet remains perfectly holy and able to save us from our sins.
He is not so removed from humanity that He cannot sympathize with us, nor so entangled in human sinfulness that He cannot deliver us. He is both our sympathetic Brother and our sinless High Priest. Therefore, He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for us (Heb. 7:25).
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for giving us exactly the High Priest we need. We praise You for Jesus, who understands our weaknesses yet remains perfectly holy. Help us draw near to You with confidence, trusting fully in His finished sacrifice and continual intercession. In Jesus’ name, amen.
