GOD DELIVERS FROM FALSE SPIRITUALITY

Listen to today's devotion

“Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against your magic bands with which you hunt the souls like birds, and I will tear them from your arms, and I will let the souls whom you hunt go free, the souls like birds” (Ezekiel 13:20 ESV).

Through the prophet Ezekiel, God pronounced judgment against false prophetesses who practiced divination and deceived His people. Their “magic bands” were apparently charms or amulets used to reinforce their claims of supernatural power. They claimed spiritual authority while speaking lies, manipulating people for personal gain and leading them away from God’s truth.

Their deception was especially destructive because they reversed God’s moral judgments. They discouraged the righteous whom God had not condemned and encouraged the wicked whom God was calling to repentance (v. 22). They comforted those who needed correction and condemned those who needed encouragement. Rather than leading people to God, their false spirituality kept them in bondage.

The apostle Paul warned of a similar danger when he described those who would turn away from sound doctrine and gather teachers to tell them what their itching ears wanted to hear (2 Tim. 4:3–4). False spirituality may appear comforting or powerful, but when it contradicts God’s Word, it ultimately enslaves rather than liberates.

Yet God’s response through Ezekiel was one of both judgment and deliverance. He promised to tear away the magic bands and release those who had been trapped like hunted birds. What a beautiful picture of His desire to rescue His people from spiritual deception!

Ultimately, this promise finds its fullest expression in Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd. Unlike false shepherds who hunt souls for personal gain, Jesus laid down His life to save His sheep (John 10:11). False teachers seek to control, but Christ came to set us free. Let us reject every counterfeit spirituality and cling to the truth of God’s Word and the freedom found in Christ alone.

PRAYER: Dear Father, give us discernment to recognize false teaching and courage to reject it. Guard our hearts from deception and keep us grounded in Your Word. Thank You for sending Jesus, our Good Shepherd, who laid down His life to set us free. In Jesus’ name, amen.
