JESUS DRANK THE CUP MEANT FOR US

“For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and he pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs” (Psalm 75:8 ESV).

The psalmist in Psalm 75 spoke to God’s people, declaring that the Lord Himself was the righteous Judge over all the earth. He described a sobering image of judgment as a cup held firmly in God’s hand. This cup was not weak or diluted. It was foaming and well mixed, symbolizing the full strength of divine wrath. God Himself would pour it out and the wicked would be required to drink it completely, even down to the bitter dregs. This picture revealed that God’s judgment was certain, total, and unavoidable. Yet this imagery pointed forward to a greater fulfillment. In the Gospels, Jesus spoke of this same cup. In Luke 22:42, He prayed that the cup might pass from Him, yet He submitted to the Father’s will. In John 18:11, He declared that He would drink the cup the Father had given Him. On Good Friday, Jesus drained the full cup of God’s wrath down to the dregs.

We are reminded today that the cup described in this psalm was the cup we deserved. Our sin placed us among those who should have drained it to the dregs. Yet Jesus stepped in our place. He did not sip from the cup. He drank it fully. This means that God’s judgment against our sin has already been poured out on Christ. Therefore, we do not live in fear of wrath but in gratitude for grace. As the apostle Paul wrote, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 8:1).

Let us trust fully in what Jesus has done and turn from the sin that once condemned us. As we reflect on this Good Friday, we remember that our salvation is not partial. It is complete because Jesus drank the cup that was meant for us.

PRAYER: Dear Father, we thank You that You are a just and righteous Judge. We confess that we deserved the cup of Your wrath because of our sin. Yet we praise You for sending Your Son to drink that cup in our place. Help us to live in gratitude, to turn from sin, and to trust completely in Christ’s finished work. Fix our hearts and minds on the cross today and remind us that our hope is secure because Jesus drank the cup meant for us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
