“Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations” (Isaiah 42:1 ESV).
Isaiah introduced the first of the “Servant Songs,” a prophecy of God’s chosen servant who would come to bring justice to the nations. In its immediate setting, Israel was called the Lord’s servant, but Isaiah pointed to someone greater than Israel itself—the faithful Servant who would perfectly fulfill God’s mission. The Lord described this Servant as upheld by His hand, filled with His Spirit, and chosen as the object of His delight. Centuries later, at Jesus’ baptism, the Father’s voice echoed these very words: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matt. 3:17). Matthew 12:18–21 quotes this passage directly, showing that Jesus is the Servant who comes gently, not crushing the weak or snuffing out the faint-hearted, but bringing hope and justice to all who believe.
The Father calls us to “behold” His Son. Are we looking to Jesus daily, or to our own strength, opinions, and plans? When we are weak, bruised, or burned out, this passage reminds us that Jesus will not cast us aside. He is gentle with those who feel crushed by sin or wearied by life. Just as He brings justice to the nations, He also brings peace and healing to our souls. Our part is to keep our eyes on Him, to behold Him as the Father’s beloved Son and our faithful Savior.
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for sending Your beloved Son, in whom You delight. Help us to behold Jesus daily and to rest in His gentle strength. When we feel bruised or burned out, remind us that we can look to our Savior. Fill us afresh with the Spirit of Christ so that our lives may reflect His gentleness and justice. In Jesus’ name, amen.
