“Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel” (Proverbs 27:9 ESV).
Solomon compares the sweetness of genuine friendship to the refreshing fragrance of oil and perfume. In ancient Israel, fragrant oils were associated with hospitality, celebration, and joyful fellowship. Just as a pleasant fragrance gladdens the heart, the sincere counsel of a faithful friend refreshes the soul.
The Hebrew expression translated “earnest counsel” carries the idea of counsel coming from the soul. It describes advice flowing from the heart of someone who genuinely cares for our well-being. The sweetness of such friendship is not found merely in having someone who agrees with us, but in having someone who loves us enough to speak the truth. As Proverbs 27:6 reminds us, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend.” A true friend tells us what we need to hear, not merely what we want to hear.
This proverb ultimately points us to Jesus Christ, the greatest Friend of all. Jesus told His disciples, “I have called you friends” (John 15:15). What an extraordinary thought! The One who knows us most completely has loved us most sacrificially. He demonstrated the greatest love by laying down His life for us (John 15:13).
Through His Word and Spirit, Jesus continues to guide, correct, and strengthen those who belong to Him. His counsel is always true, His motives always pure, and His love never fails.
And as recipients of His friendship, we are called to offer that same sincere love to others. May our words carry the sweet fragrance of Christ, refreshing weary hearts and pointing others to Him.
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for the gift of faithful friends and especially for Jesus, our greatest Friend. Teach us to receive godly counsel with humility and to offer it with sincerity and love. May our friendships reflect the sweet fragrance of Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
