“What man can live and never see death? Who can deliver his soul from the power of Sheol?” (Psalm 89:48 ESV).
Psalm 89 began with a celebration of God’s faithfulness to His covenant with David. God had promised to establish David’s throne forever. Yet the psalmist struggled to reconcile that promise with the apparent downfall of Judah and the certainty of human mortality. He asked a question no ordinary man could answer: “Who can deliver his soul from the power of Sheol?” No human strength, wisdom, or wealth could overcome the grave.
Although this verse was originally a lament over human mortality, its unanswered question ultimately found its answer in Jesus Christ, the risen Son of David. Jesus died on our behalf, bore the punishment our sins deserved, and rose victorious over the grave. He declared, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live” (John 11:25). The everlasting kingdom promised to David was secured by a King whom death could not hold!
We must acknowledge the certainty of death. No earthly achievement can exempt us from mortality. Our lives are brief, and eternity matters.
We must also recognize our inability to save ourselves. Just as we cannot deliver ourselves from physical death, we cannot rescue ourselves from sin and its eternal consequences. We need a Savior.
Finally, we can rejoice in Christ’s victory over the grave! Through faith in Him, we have forgiveness of sins and the promise of everlasting life. Death may claim our mortal bodies, but it cannot separate us from our risen Lord.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we thank You for sending Jesus Christ to conquer sin and death. Help us to number our days wisely, trust fully in Your salvation, and live with resurrection hope. In Jesus’ name, amen.
