GOOD NEWS FOR A THIRSTY SOUL

Listen to today's devotion

“Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country” (Proverbs 25:25 ESV).

Solomon compared the refreshing power of good news to cold water given to a thirsty soul. In ancient times, communication between distant countries was slow and uncertain. News from a loved one might take months to arrive. When good news finally came, especially after a long period of waiting or worry, it brought tremendous relief and renewed hope. Just as cold water refreshed a weary traveler, good news revived a weary heart.

What a beautiful picture of the gospel of Jesus Christ! The word gospel literally means “good news.” It is the greatest news ever given to a thirsty world. The gospel is not merely good advice about what we must do for God. It is good news about what God has already done for us through Jesus Christ.

We were spiritually thirsty, separated from God by our sins, and without hope. But God sent His Son from heaven to rescue us. Through His atoning death and victorious resurrection, Jesus made forgiveness, reconciliation, and eternal life available to all who repent and believe in Him.

The prophet Isaiah declared, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news” (Isa. 52:7). The apostle Paul repeated this truth in Romans 10:15, reminding us that we are called not only to receive the good news but also to share it.

Every day, we encounter people whose souls are weary and thirsty for hope. May we be faithful messengers of the only news that can truly satisfy their deepest need.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for sending us the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Refresh our weary souls with the joy of Your gospel. Give us compassion and courage to carry this life-giving message to those who desperately need it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
