Listen to today's devotion

“You have said, ‘I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: “I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.”’” (Psalm 89:3-4 ESV).

Psalm 89:3–4 recalled God’s everlasting covenant with David. The Lord had sworn to establish David’s offspring (literally, “seed”) and his throne forever. This promise echoed God’s earlier covenant with Abraham, through whose offspring all nations would be blessed. The apostle Paul ultimately identified Abraham’s promised Seed as Jesus Christ (Gal. 3:16).

As today’s One Year Bible reading in Jeremiah 33:19–22 also declared, God’s covenant promise concerning David’s throne was as certain as His established order of day and night. Yet Ethan, the psalmist, lived amid circumstances that seemed to contradict this promise. The Davidic kingdom appeared to be failing. Nevertheless, he began by remembering God’s covenant faithfulness.

We sometimes face circumstances that seem to contradict God’s promises. We may not understand His timing, His methods, or His apparent delays. Yet God’s faithfulness does not depend on what we can see, but on what He has sworn to accomplish.

The ultimate assurance of His faithfulness is Jesus Christ, the promised Son of David. When Jesus died on the cross, it appeared that the hope of David’s kingdom had died with Him. Yet His resurrection demonstrated that God’s promises will never fail. The crucified Savior rose victorious over sin and death, and His kingdom will never end.

We can trust God’s promises because we know the One who made them. In Christ, God’s covenant faithfulness is forever established. For it is King Jesus who forever sits on the throne of David.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your everlasting faithfulness. When our circumstances seem to contradict Your promises, help us remember that Your Word never fails. Strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ, the promised Son of David, whose throne is established forever. Teach us to trust Your timing and rest in Your unchanging character. In Jesus’ name, amen.
