WHEN SHAME LEADS US TO SEEK GOD

Listen to today's devotion

“Fill their faces with shame, that they may seek your name, O LORD” (Psalm 83:16 ESV).

Psalm 83 is a prayer of Asaph calling upon God to judge the enemies who had conspired to destroy Israel. Yet in the middle of this prayer for judgment, we discover a surprising prayer for repentance. Asaph asked God to fill their faces with shame, not merely to humiliate them, but so that they might seek His name. He desired that their defeat might lead them to acknowledge the one true God.

This reveals an important biblical truth: God can use shame to awaken sinners to their need for Him. Shame exposes our sin, strips away our pride, and reveals the inadequacy of our self-righteousness. Yet God’s purpose in confronting sinners is not merely to expose their shame, but to bring them to repentance and reconciliation with Himself.

Sin has brought shame since the Garden of Eden. When Adam and Eve sinned, they immediately tried to cover themselves and hide from God’s presence (Gen. 3:7–10). Yet God came seeking them.

This points us to the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus bore our sin and shame so that we might be clothed in His righteousness. Hebrews 12:2 tells us that Jesus endured the cross, “despising the shame.” At the cross, Christ bore the judgment we deserved so that we might receive the forgiveness we could never earn. As Romans 10:11 promises, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

We need not let shame drive us away from God. Instead, we can let it lead us to repentance and faith in Christ. And when others oppose us, we can pray not merely for their defeat, but for their salvation.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, turn our shame into repentance and our repentance into renewed faith. Thank You that Jesus bore our shame and clothed us in His righteousness. Help us seek Your face and pray for those who oppose us, desiring their salvation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
