“For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness” (Psalm 84:10 ESV).
The sons of Korah expressed a profound longing for God’s presence. They declared that even the humblest place near God was better than the most privileged place apart from Him. One day in God’s courts was worth more than a thousand elsewhere. Even standing at the threshold of God’s house was preferable to dwelling comfortably among the wicked. The pleasures of this world, however attractive, could never compare to the joy of fellowship with God. His presence was their greatest treasure.
We often measure the quality of life by what we possess, where we live, or what we accomplish. Yet the psalmist reminds us that life’s greatest blessing is not found in possessions, positions, or pleasures, but in God’s presence. One moment of genuine fellowship with Him is worth more than a lifetime of worldly pleasure.
And here is the glorious gospel connection. Under the old covenant, access to God’s presence was restricted. Only the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place, and only once a year. The psalmist would have gladly stood at the threshold. But through Jesus Christ, we have been welcomed into the Father’s presence! As Paul wrote, “For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father” (Eph. 2:18). Through Christ’s shed blood, we can now draw near to God with confidence (Heb. 10:19–22).
The psalmist longed to stand at God’s doorway. Through Christ, we have been given access to God’s throne room.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, forgive us for seeking satisfaction in lesser things. Thank You for opening the way into Your presence through Jesus Christ. Teach us to treasure fellowship with You above every worldly pleasure. May we live each day drawing near to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
