THE SECURITY OF THE BELIEVER

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:27–28 ESV).

In this passage, Jesus described believers as sheep who hear His voice, are known by Him, and follow Him. Jesus declared that He gives eternal life to His sheep. Eternal life was presented as a gift, not an achievement. The sheep did not earn nor maintain it. Since Christ gave eternal life, salvation rested on His grace and power rather than human ability. Jesus also promised that His sheep would never perish and that no one could snatch them out of His hand. John recorded this as a picture of Christ’s preserving power. The security of believers rested not in the sheep’s ability to hold tightly to Christ, but in Christ’s ability to hold securely to them.

We often struggle with fear, failure, and doubt. At times we may feel as though our weakness threatens our standing with Christ. Yet Jesus reminds us that salvation is His gift of grace. We did not save ourselves, and we do not sustain ourselves. The same Savior who called us also keeps us. Our hope is not rooted in the strength of our grip on Him, but in the strength of His grip on us. When we stumble, we can remember that Jesus not only saves us by grace, He keeps us by grace.

PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for sending Jesus, our Good Shepherd. Thank You for saving us through faith in Him. When fears and doubts arise, remind us that we are secure in Christ and that nothing can separate us from Your love. Help us walk in confidence and peace as those who belong to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
