WHO RULES OVER YOUR LIFE?

“But Gideon said to them, ‘I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the LORD will rule over you.’” (Judges 8:23 ESV).

After Gideon’s military victory over Midian, the people asked Gideon to establish a dynasty and rule over them, but Gideon refused, declaring that the LORD alone would rule His people. This statement reflected a proper understanding of God’s kingship over Israel and rejected the idea of a human monarchy. However, the surrounding narrative revealed a tension in Gideon’s life. Though he spoke rightly, his later actions told a different story. He gathered gold from the people like a king would receive tribute, crafted an ephod that became a snare to Israel, and named one of his sons, “Abimelech,” a name meaning “my father is king.” The author showed that while Gideon rejected kingship with his words, he subtly embraced it through his actions.

We see in Gideon a warning for our own lives. It is possible for us to say the right things about God while living in ways that contradict those truths. We can confess that the LORD rules over us, yet still seek control, recognition, or security for ourselves. Like Gideon, we may reject the title but still desire the throne. This passage calls us to examine not only what we say but how we live. Who truly rules our decisions, our desires, and our direction? We must remember that only one King is worthy of our complete allegiance. Only King Jesus can truly save us and satisfy our souls. So we must ask ourselves honestly: Who rules over your life?

PRAYER: Dear Father, we confess that we often say You are Lord while trying to rule our own lives. Forgive us for the inconsistency between our words and our actions. Help us to surrender every part of our lives to Your authority. Teach us to trust You as our true King and to follow You with wholehearted obedience. Shape our hearts so that our lives reflect what we believe. May King Jesus reign fully in us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
