GOD WANTS A FULL HOUSE

“And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.’” (Luke 14:23 ESV).

In Luke’s gospel, Jesus told a parable to those gathered at a meal, confronting their assumptions about who would share in God’s kingdom. In this parable, the originally invited guests refused to come, offering excuses that revealed their misplaced priorities. These guests likely represented the religious elite of Israel who rejected God’s invitation. The master then sent his servant to bring in the poor, crippled, blind, and lame. When there was still room, the master commanded the servant to go even farther, to the highways and hedges, urging outsiders to come in so that his house would be full. This second invitation pointed beyond Israel to the nations, showing that God’s kingdom would expand far beyond what many expected. The command to “compel” described a strong and earnest invitation, not force, but a gracious insistence that overcame hesitation and unworthiness.

We see in this passage that God’s invitation is both wide and urgent. He desires a full house. We are reminded that the gospel is not limited by our assumptions, preferences, or boundaries. Like the servant, we are sent to go beyond what is comfortable and familiar, reaching those who feel unworthy, forgotten, or far away. We do not wait for people to come to us. We go to them with urgency and compassion. This reflects the heart of Christ, who came to “seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10), and it aligns with our calling to be witnesses to the “ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). When we truly understand God’s desire, we will share His urgency. We will invite, urge, and welcome others into His kingdom. After all, God wants a full house.

PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for inviting us into Your kingdom when we were undeserving and far away. Give us hearts that reflect Your desire to see Your house filled. Help us to go beyond our comfort zones and share the gospel with urgency, compassion, and boldness. Use us to reach those who feel forgotten and far from You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
