BORN OF IMPERISHABLE SEED

“Since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God” (1 Peter 1:23 ESV).

Peter reminded his readers that their spiritual rebirth came not through human means, but through the divine Word of God. Our first birth originated from perishable human flesh and therefore resulted in a temporary, earthly life. By contrast, our second birth came through “imperishable seed,” the eternal Word. Peter used two terms to describe God’s Word. He said it is “living,” pointing to its dynamic and regenerative power. God’s Word not only reveals truth but actually gives life. It is “abiding,” emphasizing its unchanging, eternal nature and ongoing ability to sustain that life. This aligns with John 1:1–18, where the apostle John identified Jesus as the Living Word who was with God and was God, and through whom life came to all who believe. Thus, the gospel message that brought us new life is grounded in the written Word and accomplished through the Living Word, Christ Himself. Because the Word that gave us life is eternal, so is the life we now possess in Him.

Since we have been born again by the living and abiding Word, let us live with eternal priorities, not focusing on temporary concerns. Let us love one another with deep sincerity, not mere external affection, for such love flows from our new, God-given nature. Let us stand firm in confidence, knowing our salvation is secure, because its source is imperishable. And let us trust God’s Word not only as the cause of our new birth but as the sustainer of our spiritual life today. For the Word that made us alive continues to abide in us through the Spirit of Christ.

PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for causing us to be born again through Your living and abiding Word. Help us to live with eternal focus, love with sincerity, and stand firm in confidence, trusting Your Word to sustain us by Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, amen.
