DO YOU SEEK THE GIFT OR THE GIVER?

“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” (John 6:27 ESV).

Jesus challenged the motives of the crowd who followed Him after the miraculous feeding of the 5,000. They sought more bread, but Jesus offered something far greater—eternal life. Their hunger was real, but Jesus pointed them to a deeper hunger of the soul. He urged them to shift their focus from temporary, material concerns to the lasting, spiritual nourishment He alone could give. The true gift was not the bread, but the Bread of Life Himself.

We often come to Jesus with our physical and emotional needs—seeking help with relationships, health, finances, or direction. These are not wrong in themselves, but they must not become the reason we follow Him. Jesus offers us something better than temporary relief. He gives eternal life, peace that surpasses understanding, and a relationship with the living God. Let us no longer chase after what perishes. Let us seek Jesus for who He is, not just what He gives. May our hearts echo the prayer, “Give me Jesus.” When all is stripped away, we know that He is more than enough.

PRAYER: Dear Father, we thank You for the grace that drew us to Jesus, even when our first steps were motivated by our needs and hurts. Forgive us for the times we have sought the gifts more than the Giver. Help us to hunger for what truly matters. Teach us to seek the Bread of Life, not the bread that perishes. Shape our desires to want more of Christ and less of this world. Strengthen our faith so that we may say with joy and confidence, “Give us Jesus.” In His name we pray, amen.
