WHERE DO YOU PLACE YOUR TRUST?

Listen to today's devotion

“For, because you trusted in your works and your treasures, you also shall be taken. And Chemosh shall go into exile with his priests and his officials” (Jeremiah 48:7 ESV).

God gave Jeremiah a word of coming judgment, not only against Judah but also against the surrounding nations of Moab, Ammon, and Edom. To Moab, God warned of the danger of misplaced trust. Moab’s greatest problem wasn’t its wealth, accomplishments, or military strength. It was placing its confidence in those things rather than in God. The people trusted in their prosperity, fortified cities, and Chemosh, their false god.

Yet there was a striking irony in God’s warning. Chemosh, the god they trusted to protect them, would himself be carried into captivity! This man-made idol was powerless to save itself. How could a god who needed to be carried possibly protect those who worshiped him? In Isaiah 46:4, God presents a beautiful contrast. Unlike lifeless idols that must be carried, the living God promises to carry and sustain His people.

God was exposing the foolishness of misplaced trust. Wealth can disappear, accomplishments can fade, and earthly security can crumble. Anything we lean on instead of God is an unreliable foundation. It’s easy to make the same mistake as Moab. We work hard, accumulate possessions, and gradually begin finding our security in what we’ve accomplished rather than in the Lord.

The apostle Paul warned believers not to set their hopes on uncertain riches, but on God, “who richly provides us with everything to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17). God isn’t opposed to our enjoying His blessings. He simply doesn’t want us trusting those blessings more than we trust Him.

Where are you placing your trust today? In things you must protect and preserve, or in the living God who carries and sustains you? God gives us blessings to enjoy, not to depend upon. Therefore, let us place our confidence in the Giver, not the gifts!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your blessings. Forgive us when we trust in things that cannot last. Teach us to place our confidence in You alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.
