“For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin” (Romans 14:23 ESV).
Paul wrote to believers in Rome who disagreed over food, sacred days, and other disputable matters. Some Christians felt free to eat certain foods, while others believed doing so would violate their conscience. Paul taught that an action could be permissible in itself yet become sinful when a believer performed it while doubting whether it pleased God.
In this context, “faith” referred to a confident persuasion that an action was acceptable before God. Paul was not teaching that personal feelings determined right and wrong. Nor was he saying that sincere conviction could make a genuinely sinful action permissible. Scripture remained the objective standard of truth. Conscience did not create God’s moral law. It testified to what a person believed that law required. A conscience can be weak, overly sensitive, misinformed, hardened, or shaped by human tradition. Yet it should not be ignored or repeatedly violated. It must be instructed and corrected by God’s Word.
The new birth also changes the believer’s relationship to conscience. God gives His people a new heart and puts His Spirit within them so that they desire to walk in His ways. Through Christ’s blood, the conscience is cleansed from guilt. Through the indwelling Spirit, it becomes increasingly tender toward sin and responsive to God. The Spirit does not make the conscience infallible, but He trains it through Scripture to recognize what pleases God.
We must never violate a clear biblical command. In disputable matters, we should not rush forward while our hearts remain uncertain. When we doubt, we should pause, pray, and seek biblical clarity.
At the same time, we must not allow fear, tradition, or personal preference to rule us indefinitely. We can continually bring our consciences under the authority of Scripture. The Holy Spirit corrects an uninformed conscience, softens a hardened conscience, and makes us more sensitive to attitudes, motives, words, and actions that grieve God.
A mature Christian’s conscience is neither careless nor captive. It is cleansed by Christ, informed by Scripture, influenced by the Spirit, and confident in the gospel. This is the freedom and faith of the redeemed conscience.
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for giving us new hearts and putting Your Spirit within us. Cleanse our consciences through the blood of Christ, correct them through Your Word, and make them tender toward sin. Teach us to act with faith, gratitude, and a sincere desire to honor You in all things. In Jesus’ name, amen.
