“Likewise, when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a far country for your name’s sake… and prays toward this house, hear in heaven your dwelling place and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to you, in order that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you…” (1 Kings 8:41-43 ESV).
The author of Kings recorded Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the temple. Solomon prayed not only for God’s covenant people but also for foreigners who would come seeking the Lord. He understood that the temple was intended to be more than a gathering place for Israel. It was meant to be a testimony to the nations. God’s purpose was that people from every land would hear of His great name, witness His mighty works, and come to worship Him. Solomon recognized that Israel had been blessed so that the nations might know the Lord. His prayer anticipated the ministry of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ.
We are reminded that the gospel is not only ours to keep but ours to share. Just as the temple pointed the nations to God, our lives are to point others to Christ. We have been blessed to be a blessing. When we pray, serve, give, and witness, we participate in God’s mission to make His name known throughout the earth. Let us resist the temptation to become inward-focused and instead embrace God’s global purpose. As followers of Jesus, we are called to live and speak in such a way that others are drawn to the Savior, so that all may know.
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for Your desire to save people from every nation, tribe, and language. Forgive us when we become focused only on ourselves and forget Your mission for the world. Fill our hearts with compassion for those who do not yet know You. Help us to be faithful witnesses of Your grace and truth. Use our lives, our churches, and our prayers so that many will come to know and worship You. May we live each day with the desire that all may know Your great name. In Jesus’ name, amen.
