“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand” (Proverbs 19:21 ESV).
Solomon wrote this proverb to instruct God’s people in the way of wisdom. He acknowledged that people naturally devise many plans, goals, and strategies for their lives. Yet he reminded his readers that while human planning has its place, God’s sovereign purpose alone will ultimately stand. Solomon did not discourage wise planning. Elsewhere he commended seeking counsel, committing our work to the Lord, and planning diligently. His point was that every plan must be held with humility because God’s will is always greater than our own. James later echoed this same truth, urging believers to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that” (James 4:15). The greatest demonstration of God’s unfailing purpose was revealed in Jesus Christ. Though sinful men made their own plans against Him, God accomplished His eternal plan of redemption through Christ’s death and resurrection. Human plans may change or fail, but God’s saving purpose always prevails.
We fill our calendars, set our goals, and make careful plans for the future. There is wisdom in planning, but there is danger in assuming we control tomorrow. When our plans fail, we can become frustrated and discouraged unless we remember that our Father’s purpose never fails. We can make plans with diligence while surrendering them with humility. We can pray over every decision, seek godly counsel, and gladly adjust our course whenever the Lord directs us differently. Because God’s purpose is always wiser than ours and His love for us has been proven through Christ, we can trust Him when life unfolds differently than we expected. Today, let us plan, but let us hold our plans loosely, being flexible to always bend to God’s revealed purpose.
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You that Your purposes never fail. Give us wisdom to plan carefully and humility to surrender every plan to Your will. Help us trust You when our plans change, knowing that Your ways are always better than ours. Teach us to live each day saying, “If the Lord wills,” and to follow wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name, amen.
