“[He] makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind; he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire” (Psalm 104:3–4 ESV).

Psalm 104 is a magnificent hymn praising God as the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. The psalmist paints a breathtaking picture of God’s majesty. He covers Himself with light, stretches out the heavens like a tent, makes the clouds His chariot, and rides upon the wings of the wind. All creation is under His sovereign command!

Verse 4 offers two possible interpretations. The first understands the winds and flames as God’s messengers. Just as the preceding verses describe His command over the heavens, this verse declares that even the winds and lightning serve His purposes. The second interpretation understands God’s messengers as angels, whom He makes like winds and flames of fire, emphasizing their swiftness, power, and glory.

Both interpretations are possible in Hebrew. However, the author of Hebrews explicitly applies this verse to angels, writing, “He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire” (Heb. 1:7). Yet his purpose is to show that Jesus Christ is greater than the angels. For angels are servants, but Jesus is the eternal Son who reigns forever (Heb. 1:8).

What a glorious truth! All creation and all the heavenly hosts serve the Lord, but Jesus Christ reigns supreme over them all. And here is the wonder of the gospel: The One who commands the winds and angels humbled Himself to become our servant and Savior. He came “to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

Our great God is not only mighty in power but marvelous in mercy! Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can know the One who rules over all things and rest securely in His saving love.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we praise You for Your majesty, power, and mercy. Open our eyes to Your greatness and our hearts to Your grace revealed in Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
