“Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised” (Song of Solomon 8:6–7 ESV).
Solomon celebrated the beauty and power of covenant love between a man and woman. Throughout the Song, gardens, fruit, fragrances, fountains, physical beauty, and mutual delight created an almost Eden-like picture of love as God designed it. Here near the book’s conclusion, the beloved described that love as permanent, powerful, enduring, and priceless.
She asked to be set as a “seal” upon the heart and arm, expressing exclusive belonging and lasting commitment. She declared that “love is strong as death” and that “many waters cannot quench” it, nor “all the wealth” buy it. True covenant love could neither be extinguished by adversity nor purchased with money.
Yet within Scripture, marriage points beyond itself. Jesus called Himself the Bridegroom, and Paul wrote that the mystery of marriage ultimately refers to “Christ and the church” (Eph. 5:32). What human marriage beautifully pictures, Christ perfectly fulfills. He “loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Eph. 5:25). His love truly proved stronger than death. He entered death for His bride, rose victorious over the grave, and now nothing can separate His people from His love.
We can receive marriage and romantic love as good gifts from God while remembering that even the best human love is only a signpost to something greater. No spouse can bear the full weight of our deepest longing. Only Christ can.
We can rest in the love of our Bridegroom, Jesus Christ. For His love for us is stronger than death.
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for the good gift of covenant love and for the greater love to which it points. Help us love one another faithfully, but keep our deepest hope fixed on Christ, our Bridegroom, who gave Himself for us and conquered the grave. May we rest securely in His unquenchable love.
