“Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” (Luke 24:45 ESV).
Luke wrote that after His resurrection, Jesus met with His disciples and opened their understanding of the Scriptures concerning Him. Earlier in the chapter, they were slow of heart to believe and were even kept from recognizing Him. Though they had walked with Jesus and heard His teaching, they still did not understand the Scriptures concerning His suffering and resurrection. What they needed was not more information, but illumination, so Jesus opened their minds.
Luke highlighted a recurring theme of spiritual blindness giving way to sight. This moment echoed God’s work throughout Scripture, where He alone grants understanding. Jesus, the fulfillment of the Scriptures, now explained them and enabled His followers to grasp their meaning. This truth aligns with Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians 2:14-16, where he wrote that the natural person cannot understand the things of God because they are spiritually discerned. But believers have been given the “mind of Christ.”
We recognize that we can read the Bible and still miss its meaning without God’s help. Our intellect and effort are not enough to grasp spiritual truth. We need Jesus to open our minds just as He did for the disciples. We must depend on the Holy Spirit to illuminate the Word so that we see Christ clearly in all of Scripture. When He opens our minds, confusion gives way to clarity and doubt gives way to conviction. Then we are not only informed but transformed. As we come to God’s Word daily, we should come humbly, asking for understanding and expecting Him to speak. Reading God’s Word we can say as young Samuel did, “Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening” (1 Sam. 3:10).
PRAYER: Dear Father, we confess that apart from You we cannot understand Your truth. Open our minds by Your Spirit so that we may see Christ clearly in Your Word. Give us the mind of Christ and help us to grow in understanding and obedience. Use Your Word to transform us and send us out to share the gospel with others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
