“Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler.” (Proverbs 20:19 ESV).
Solomon warned that those who speak carelessly, especially those who slander or gossip, cannot be trusted with confidential or sensitive matters. The one who “reveals secrets” proves unfaithful. Likewise, the “simple babbler” (literally, “one who opens wide his lips”) lacks discretion and discernment. This proverb warns us not only to avoid becoming this kind of talker but also to be cautious about forming close associations with such people. As other proverbs affirm, “a gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret” (Prov. 11:13). James echoed this warning in the New Testament, describing the tongue as “a fire, a world of unrighteousness” (James 3:6), full of deadly poison when not tamed. Though no one can tame the tongue on their own, the Spirit of Christ empowers believers to speak with grace, truth, and self-control.
We must guard our words and our relationships. If we are honest, we know how tempting it can be to share a juicy detail or pass along an unkind word, often cloaked as concern or a prayer request. But such speech betrays trust and does not reflect the heart of Christ. We must also be careful about whom we confide in. If someone frequently gossips to us, they will likely gossip about us. Let’s resolve to be people who use our words to build up, not tear down—who speak the truth in love and keep confidences. And let’s not rely on mere willpower to control our tongues. Instead, let us daily yield to the Holy Spirit, who produces the fruit of self-control. Through the gospel, Christ has set us free, not to say whatever we want, but to speak in a way that edifies others and honors Him.
PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times we’ve spoken or listened to gossip. Cleanse our hearts, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Teach us to speak with wisdom, restraint, and kindness. Help us to know when to correct and when to avoid those who gossip and to be people others can trust. Spirit of Christ, tame our tongues for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
