“Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise” (Proverbs 20:1 ESV).
Solomon warned about alcohol’s deceptive and controlling power. He personified wine as a mocker and strong drink as a brawler. Wine mocked those who trusted its promises of pleasure, relief, or confidence, only to leave them with shame and regret. It could also turn the drinker into a mocker, loosening the tongue and releasing words and actions that sober judgment would restrain.
Strong drink was called a “brawler,” a word describing someone noisy, boisterous, and quarrelsome. Intoxication often produced shouting, fighting, and disorder. Solomon’s warning, “whoever is led astray by it,” pictured someone wandering, staggering, or surrendering direction. The danger was progressive. First it attracted. Then it altered. Finally it directed.
This proverb reminds me of “Devil in the Bottle,” written by my cousin Bobby David. Recorded by T. G. Sheppard, it became a number-one country hit in 1975. Unlike many country songs that celebrated drinking or treated it humorously, Bobby’s song portrayed alcoholism with sobering seriousness. Its title captured Solomon’s warning well. Alcohol may appear contained in a bottle, yet once welcomed as a master, it can unleash destruction in a person’s life.
Alcohol promises pleasure but can produce humiliation. It promises relaxation but can provoke conflict. It promises freedom but can become a master. Therefore, we must ask not merely whether drinking is permitted, but whether it is profitable.
Paul gave us the positive alternative: “Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). We must refuse every influence that clouds wisdom and loosens godly restraint. Instead, we must yield ourselves daily to the gracious, transforming control of the Holy Spirit. The wise recognize the devil in the bottle and refuse to let him lead.
PRAYER: Dear Father, give us wisdom to recognize every influence that seeks to master us. Guard us from deception, protect our families from addiction, and fill us continually with Your Holy Spirit. May our words, choices, and conduct remain under Your control. In Jesus’ name, amen.
