“Who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Corinthians 1:4 ESV).
Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth about the “God of all comfort” who comforted His people in every kind of affliction. The word translated “comfort” carries the idea of encouragement, strengthening, and help. Paul was not describing God as merely soothing emotional pain. He was describing the God who came alongside suffering believers and gave them strength to endure.
Paul had personally known persecution, opposition, danger, disappointment, fear, and the pressures of ministry. Yet he had also known God’s sustaining comfort in those places. And that comfort had a purpose beyond Paul himself. God comforted him “so that” he might comfort others. What Paul received from God became something that could flow through him to suffering people.
God was the source of the comfort. Paul was simply its conduit. His afflictions had become part of his ministry because he could now offer others the comfort he himself had received from God.
God still works this way in us. We are often called to minister to others from places where we once suffered. The fatherless who has found comfort in the heavenly Father can care for the orphan. The cancer survivor can sit beside the chemo patient. The addict whom Christ has set free can proclaim hope to those still in bondage.
We do not minister from our brokenness. We minister from the grace and comfort God has poured into our broken places. God never wastes the comfort He gives us. He comforts us not only for our consolation, but also for our preparation. His comfort flows to us so that it can overflow through us to others.
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for meeting us in every affliction with Your sustaining comfort. Strengthen us in our suffering and heal us that we might comfort others. Make us conduits of Your grace so that the comfort we receive from You overflows to comfort others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
