“But as for you, be serious about everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Timothy 4:5 HCSB).

FULFILLING THE MINISTRY GOD HAS GIVEN YOU

As Paul faced the real possibility of execution for preaching the gospel, he gave final instructions to Timothy. He wanted Timothy to be unafraid of suffering and willing to work hard for the sake of the Good News. Like a captain issuing orders to one of his soldiers, Paul charged Timothy to “fulfill” his mission.

Notice Paul’s specific instructions. “Be serious.” Stay focused on your calling, not getting caught up in foolish things. “Endure hardship.” Persevere, hang tough, stay strong in the power of Christ that strengthens you. “Do the work of an evangelist.” Make telling others the Good News about Jesus something you are intentional about, not just occasionally or accidentally, but with the awareness of one who has been employed by God to do so. “Fulfill your ministry.” Don’t balk in the final stretch, but run with all your might across the finish line. Jesus was obedient to fulfill His ministry, even unto the cross. This is our commission too. Finish well. Starting well is good, but finishing well is better.

Are you focused on fufilling the ministry God has given to you?

PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for saving us and calling us first to Yourself and then to others for the sake of the gospel. Forgive us when we lack zeal for the work You have given us. Fill us afresh with Your Spirit, so that we labor according to Your power and not our own. Lord, we want to fulfill the ministry You have given us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
