AVOIDING UNPROFITABLE THEOLOGICAL CONTROVERSIES

Listen to today's devotion

“But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless” (Titus 3:9 ESV).

Paul has just proclaimed the marvelous truth of salvation by God’s grace, not by our works, but through the regenerating and renewing work of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:4–7). He then urges believers to devote themselves to good works, which are profitable for everyone (v. 8). In contrast, he warns against foolish controversies that produce division rather than spiritual fruit.

Paul is not dismissing the importance of sound doctrine. Earlier, he instructed church leaders to refute those who contradict biblical truth (Titus 1:9). Rather, he distinguishes between defending the faith and engaging in pointless arguments. The goal of sound doctrine is not merely correct belief but transformed lives. Truth should produce godliness, not contentiousness.

This warning is especially significant in light of our former condition. Paul reminds us that we were once foolish, disobedient, and enslaved to sinful passions (v. 3). Having been rescued by God’s mercy and renewed by His Spirit, we must not return to those same patterns under the guise of religious devotion.

The gospel calls us to be more concerned with becoming like Christ than with winning arguments about Christ. As Paul instructed Timothy, we are to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace while avoiding foolish controversies that breed quarrels (2 Timothy 2:22–23).

Our pursuit of theological understanding must always serve the greater purpose of knowing Christ, loving others, and walking in obedience. We are called not simply to defend the truth, but to demonstrate its transforming power.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, give us wisdom to defend Your truth without becoming contentious. Guard us against pride and fruitless arguments. May Your Spirit continually renew our hearts, making us more like Christ in our words, attitudes, and actions. In Jesus’ name, amen.
