“The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good” (Psalm 53:1 ESV).
David described more than philosophical atheism. He exposed practical atheism, the settled determination to live as though God does not exist, does not see, and will not judge. The Hebrew word translated “fool,” nabal, referred not merely to intellectual weakness but to moral perversity. The fool might have been intelligent, yet he ordered his life without reference to God.
David traced the progression clearly: “There is no God,” then “They are corrupt,” then “doing abominable iniquity.” Rejecting God’s rule led to moral corruption. Paul later described the same pattern in Romans 1, where humanity suppressed the truth about God and descended into spiritual darkness.
Yet David’s indictment did not stop with obvious unbelievers. He concluded, “there is none who does good.” Paul quoted this language in Romans 3:10–12 to show that all humanity stood guilty before God. The problem is not merely out there. It is in every human heart.
We can confess belief in God with our mouths while living our lives as though He were absent. We make plans without seeking Him, worry as though He were not caring for us, hide sin as though He could not see, or depend on ourselves as though everything rested on us.
Yet God has not left us to the foolishness of our own hearts. He sought us when we were not seeking Him and brought us near through Christ. His grace calls us to trust His presence, submit to His rule, and walk with Him in every part of life.
So let us examine not only what we say we believe, but how we actually live. Because practical atheism starts in the heart before the head.
PRAYER: Dear Father, forgive us for the ways we live as though You were distant or unaware. Thank You for seeking and finding us in Christ and giving us His righteousness. Rule over our hearts so that our lives display our faith in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
