A MODEL PRAYER FOR LEADERSHIP SUCCESSION

“Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the LORD may not be as sheep that have no shepherd” (Numbers 27:16–17 ESV).

Moses, writing to the people of Israel, recorded his prayer to the LORD at a critical moment near the end of his leadership. Having been told he would not enter the Promised Land, Moses addressed God as “the God of the spirits of all flesh,” affirming God’s sovereign authority over every human life and His intimate knowledge of every heart. Rather than appointing his own successor, Moses entrusted the decision entirely to God. His request emphasized the need for a leader who would “go out before them,” “come in before them,” and “lead them out and bring them in,” phrases that described active, visible, and faithful leadership among the people. Moses’ concern was deeply pastoral, that Israel would not become “like sheep that have no shepherd.” This imagery established a foundational biblical theme of shepherd-leadership, later fulfilled in Christ. God answered this prayer by appointing Joshua, a type of Christ, who would lead the people into the Promised Land.

We are reminded that leadership belongs to God, not to us. As we face transitions in leadership—whether in our homes, churches, or ministries—we must trust the Lord who knows every heart to raise up the right leaders. Like Moses, we should care more about the well-being of God’s people than our own position or legacy. We are also called to value leaders who are present, active, and engaged, those who walk with us and guide us faithfully. Ultimately, we look to Jesus, our perfect Shepherd. As we depend on Him, we learn to pray and trust Him for what comes next.

PRAYER: Dear Father, You alone look on and know every human heart. Teach us to trust You in times of transition and to seek Your will above our own. Give us shepherds who will faithfully lead Your people, and shape us to be people who follow well. Help us to fix our eyes on Christ, our perfect Shepherd. In Jesus’ name, amen.
