“As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him” (Psalm 103:15–17 ESV).
This is one of the most beautiful contrasts in the Psalms between the brevity of human life and the eternity of God’s steadfast love. David compares humanity to grass and wildflowers that quickly flourish and fade, but then declares that God’s covenant love endures forever.
The image of a wildflower is especially fitting. It springs up, blooms for a season, and displays its beauty. Yet a passing wind can cause it to wither and disappear. Soon, even the place where it grew bears no evidence that it was ever there. So it is with our earthly lives. We flourish for a time, but our days are numbered.
Then comes the glorious contrast of verse 17: “But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting.”The Hebrew word chesed speaks of God’s faithful, covenant-keeping love. Unlike our fleeting lives, His love has neither beginning nor end. His mercy does not fade with the changing seasons or perish with the passing generations.
Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can rest in a love that not even death can destroy. Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). He died and rose again so that all who believe in Him might have everlasting life. Although our earthly lives are temporary, God’s steadfast love joins our fleeting existence to His eternal life.
Our days are measured in years, but God’s love is measured in eternity. Let us fear Him, trust Him, and rest in His unfading love.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your everlasting steadfast love. Teach us to number our days and live wisely, trusting not in our own strength but in Your great mercy. Thank You for the everlasting life we have through Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
