“For I will surely save you, and you shall not fall by the sword, but you shall have your life as a prize of war, because you have put your trust in me, declares the LORD” (Jeremiah 39:18 ESV).

God gave Jeremiah this remarkable promise for Ebed-melech, an Ethiopian official who had courageously rescued the prophet from a muddy cistern where he had been left to die. Risking his own safety, Ebed-melech had appealed to King Zedekiah and gathered thirty men to rescue Jeremiah.

Now, as Jerusalem faced destruction, God sent a personal word of deliverance to this faithful Gentile. While the city would fall under Babylonian judgment, Ebed-melech would be spared. Why? God declared, “Because you have put your trust in me.”

What a beautiful reminder of God’s care for the one! Amid the sweeping events of nations at war and a city facing judgment, God saw one man who trusted Him and acted courageously.

This account also anticipates another Ethiopian official whom Philip encountered on the desert road to Gaza (Acts 8:26–39). Centuries later, God again demonstrated His care for one seeking soul, sending Philip to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to him.

We must never underestimate God’s personal care for us. He sees us, knows us, and remembers our faithfulness. Like Ebed-melech, we can trust Him even when obedience requires courage. And like Philip, we can remember that God cares about reaching one person with the gospel. The same Lord who saw one Ethiopian in Jerusalem and another on a desert road still sees and cares for each one of us today.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your personal care for us. Strengthen our faith to trust and obey You courageously. Give us Your heart for the one who needs to know Jesus. In Jesus’ name, amen.
