“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 ESV).

In Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, he gave three short commands that described God’s will for believers: constant joy, continual prayer, and consistent gratitude. Remarkably, Paul wrote these words to Christians experiencing suffering and persecution. He wasn’t addressing people whose lives were free from trouble. Rather, he was teaching them how to live faithfully in Christ regardless of their circumstances.

We often ask, “What is God’s will for our lives?” We want to know where to go, what to do, or which decision to make. Yet here, God’s will concerns not so much our circumstances as our response to them.

First, we are to rejoice always. Christian joy is not the absence of sorrow but the presence of Christ. Happiness fluctuates with circumstances, but our reasons for rejoicing in Christ remain constant.

Second, we are to pray without ceasing. This doesn’t mean praying every moment, but living in continual communion with our heavenly Father. Prayer is more than an occasional activity. It is an ongoing relationship with God.

Third, we are to give thanks in all circumstances. We may not be thankful for what’s happening to us, but we can always be thankful for the God who is with us. Our gratitude is grounded in the gospel. Through Christ, our sins are forgiven, we are reconciled to God, and our eternal future is secure.

God doesn’t command us to have trouble-free lives. He calls us to rejoice, pray, and give thanks in the midst of the lives we actually have. And by His grace, we can!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your will for us in Christ Jesus. Teach us to rejoice in Your salvation, remain in constant communion with You, and give thanks in every circumstance. May our lives reflect the joy, prayerfulness, and gratitude that come from being in Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
