Listen to today's devotion

“For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night” (1 Thessalonians 5:2 ESV).

Earlier in chapter four, the apostle Paul had comforted the Thessalonian believers concerning the resurrection of those who had died in Christ (4:13–18). Now he turned to the timing of the Lord’s return and the need for spiritual readiness. He reminded them that the day of the Lord would come unexpectedly, “like a thief in the night.”

A thief does not announce his arrival. He comes when least expected. Similarly, the day of the Lord will catch an unbelieving world unprepared, confident in its own peace and security (v. 3). Yet Paul reminded believers that they were not in darkness, but were children of light (vv. 4–5). Therefore, they should remain awake, sober, and watchful.

Paul’s emphasis was not on predicting the date of Christ’s return, but on being prepared for it. The certainty of His coming should shape the way we live today.

We may not know when the Lord will return, but we can know Him who is returning. And knowing Him, we can live in a state of watchful readiness.

The same Jesus who bore God’s wrath for us on the cross is coming again in glory. We need not fear His coming, for God has not destined us for wrath, but for salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ (v. 9).

Let us respond to Christ’s promised return with watchfulness, not worry. His coming is not intended to fill God’s children with fear, but with confident hope. We belong to Christ, the Light of the World. Therefore, let us walk in His light, living faithfully and expectantly until He comes.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of Christ’s return. Help us live as children of light, awake and ready, trusting in our Savior who died for us and is coming again. May we be found faithful when He comes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
