“With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand” (Psalm 78:72 ESV).
Asaph concluded this psalm recounting Israel’s repeated failures and God’s enduring faithfulness by describing David’s leadership. God had taken David from tending his father’s sheep to shepherding His people Israel (vv. 70–71). Those years in the pasture were not wasted. God was preparing David’s heart and hands for a greater calling.
David’s leadership was characterized by two essential qualities: integrity of heart and skillfulness of hands. Integrity concerned his motives, while skillfulness concerned his methods. Both were necessary. A leader with good intentions but little wisdom may lead poorly. Yet a gifted leader without integrity may use his abilities selfishly. Godly leadership requires both character and competence.
David was an imperfect shepherd-king who pointed forward to the perfect One, Jesus Christ. Jesus declared, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). Where David sometimes failed, Jesus never fails. His heart is perfectly pure, His wisdom is infinite, and His hands are mighty to save.
God still prepares us to shepherd those entrusted to our care, whether in our families, churches, workplaces, or communities. We need more than good intentions or natural abilities. We need hearts shaped by Christ’s character and hands equipped by His wisdom. As we follow our Good Shepherd, He develops both our integrity and our ability to serve others faithfully.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus, our perfect Shepherd-King. Shape our hearts with His integrity and train our hands with His wisdom. Forgive us when our motives are selfish or our methods unwise. Help us faithfully shepherd those You have entrusted to our care, always pointing them to Jesus. In Jesus’ name, amen.
