Listen to today's devotion

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13–14 ESV).

Paul reminded the Colossian believers that salvation was nothing less than a divine rescue. They had once lived under “the domain of darkness,” a realm ruled by sin, spiritual blindness, and the power of the evil one. But God had “delivered” them. The word carries the sense of being rescued from danger or from the power of an enemy.

Paul then said that God had “transferred” them into the kingdom of His beloved Son. The language recalls the ancient practice of moving a people from one kingdom into another. God had not merely improved their condition in the old kingdom. He had brought them out and transferred them in.

This is our spiritual exodus in Christ. Just as God brought Israel out of slavery in Egypt and into a new life under His rule, He has brought us out of slavery to sin and into the kingdom of His Son.

And this rescue came at a cost. In Christ, “we have redemption,” the release of captives through the payment of a price. Paul immediately explained that redemption as “the forgiveness of sins.” Our guilt has been removed because Christ paid the price for us.

We should remember that the Christian life is not about self-improvement. We have changed kingdoms. We no longer belong to the domain of darkness. We belong to Christ.

So we can stop living as though we were still slaves to the old master. Sin may tempt us, but it no longer owns us. Our King is Jesus, and in Him we are redeemed and forgiven.

Let us live today as citizens of His kingdom, grateful for our exodus in Christ.

PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for rescuing us from darkness and bringing us into the kingdom of Your beloved Son. Strengthen us to live as people who are redeemed, forgiven, and free. In Jesus’ name, amen.
