“Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter” (Proverbs 24:11 ESV).
Solomon instructed his son to intervene when he saw someone heading toward destruction. The first phrase pictured the helpless, those “being taken away to death.” They were being carried toward death by forces beyond their control. They needed someone to step in and rescue them.
The second phrase pictured those “stumbling to the slaughter.” The word translated “stumbling” carries the idea of tottering or staggering. They were moving toward destruction, perhaps unable to see clearly where the path was leading. They needed someone to “hold them back.”
Some are helpless. Others are hopeless. Some are being carried toward death. Others are staggering toward it because they see no better way forward.
The next verse removes the excuse of the passive observer: “If you say, ‘Behold, we did not know this,’ does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?” (Prov. 24:12). We cannot simply look away and pretend we did not know. God sees both the endangered and the one who had opportunity to intervene.
This principle speaks powerfully to the unborn child facing abortion and to the frightened mother who may feel trapped by an unplanned pregnancy. The child is helpless and needs rescuing. The mother may feel hopeless and need someone to lovingly show her that death is not the only way forward.
We must not look away when God reveals such need to us. Godly wisdom calls us to move toward people with truth, compassion, practical help, and hope. Jesus came to rescue us when we were helpless to save ourselves. He came to open our eyes when we stumbled in darkness without hope. Let us respond to the helpless and the hopeless as the body of Christ in this world.
PRAYER: Dear Father, keep us from looking away when others are moving toward destruction. Give us courage and compassion to protect life, offer practical help, speak gospel truth, and give hope in Christ. Use us to rescue the helpless and restrain the hopeless. In Jesus’ name, amen.
