“Let the righteous one rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him! Let all the upright in heart exult!” (Psalm 64:10 ESV).
David had begun this psalm crying out to God because of the secret plots and malicious words of his enemies. They had sharpened their tongues like swords, aimed bitter words like arrows, and believed they could attack without fear of being exposed. Yet David trusted that God would act. By the end of the psalm, the situation had completely changed. David moved from fear of his enemies to refuge in God.
He called the righteous to “rejoice in the LORD,” because God had shown Himself faithful. He urged them to “take refuge in him,” because God alone was their secure hiding place. And he called the upright in heart to “exult,” or boast, not in themselves, but in the Lord who had delivered them.
David’s experience also pointed beyond itself to the greater Son of David. Jesus was surrounded by enemies who plotted against Him, falsely accused Him, and verbally condemned Him. Yet the cross, which appeared to be their victory, became the very means by which God defeated sin, death, and Satan. God publicly vindicated His Son by raising Him from the dead.
The God in whom David took refuge has made His saving grace known to us fully in His Son. At the cross, God dealt with the enemies we could never defeat ourselves. Jesus bore our judgment, paid for our sin, and conquered death through His resurrection.
Because we belong to Christ, we do not have to live under fear and condemnation. Our security rests not in our ability to defend ourselves, but in the crucified and risen Christ. We can rejoice in God’s saving grace, take refuge in His faithful care, and boast not in ourselves, but in Christ alone.
Whatever we face today, let us remember where our true joy and security is found. Let us rejoice and take refuge in Christ.
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for giving us a sure refuge in Christ. Help us turn from fear and place our confidence in Your saving grace. Teach us to rejoice in You and boast only in what Jesus has done for us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
